About The Wine Loft
An Interview with Bill Boyer
Q. Why did you decide to open a wine bar/wine store in North County?
A. My wife, Jennifer and I (photographed to the left) love North County San Diego and felt there was nowhere to purchase and sample wine from the small independent wineries which are our favorites.
Q. Why did you decide to go into the wine business?
A. I have been peripherally around it all my life. I grew up in the restaurant business (my mom and dad owned a steak and seafood restaurant for 35 years in Newport Beach), attended wine tastings and visited Napa Valley. My desire was to get paid to do what I would pay to do, and pursuing my interest in wines, winemakers and wine regions is just that.
Q. How has The Wine Loft evolved since you first opened?
A. After opening our store in March of 2005 we didn’t really foresee the tremendous demand for the wine bar. We have an unbelievable following of customers who have now become good friends. The wine bar is an area we are presently looking to expand.
Q. What do you think customers least expect or don’t know about The Wine Loft?
A. Unlike other stores, my wife Jennifer and I own and operate the store. I am the wine buyer, bookkeeper, janitor etc. Jennifer handles the accessory buying, email campaign, wine club, and merchandising.
Q. How do you decide on which wines to bring in to your store to sell to your customers?
A. I am constantly staying abreast of the wine media, however more importantly I sample roughly 100 wines per week. I think this really gives me a sense of what wine is out there and their relative value. I also depend on very knowledgeable wine reps who know the types of wines I am looking for and they are always bringing various great wines for me to choose from.
Q. What is your most memorable bottle of wine?
A. A 1982 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. I received it as a college graduation present from my aunt and uncle who own Hi-Time Cellars(a large retail store in Orange County) that wine was on a whole different level than anything I had ever had.
Q. What wine are you drinking now?
A. I am constantly trying new wines. I really enjoy the wines from The Terraces, Eric Kent and Saxon Brown.
Q. What’s next for TWL?
A. Right now we are looking into expanding our seating in our wine bar area. We would also like to re-arrange our wine racks in order to offer more selection, primarily Imports and we are hoping to add more food items to our menu. Stay tuned!
